The Santos Experience – Backroom Staff

Yesterday I showed you my Head of Youth Development and how I was going to try to replace him. I felt he deserved his own article because he is the most important member of staff I have at the club. What I thought I’d do now is to show you the rest of the staff and talk about where I need to strengthen. It will take time to get the perfect staff due to finances and reputation as many top coaches won’t want to join me just yet. That doesn’t mean we can’t get the best staff we can for our level though but before I find any replacements or additions, I need to access my current staff.

Due to me mentioning personality a lot I think it’ll be useful if I repost something I did a while ago so you can determine which personality types are good and bad. This will then give you an idea of what you can look for in your own saves.

A players personality is made up from hidden attributes;

  • Adaptability
  • Ambition
  • Controversy
  • Loyalty
  • Pressure
  • Professionalism
  • Sportsmanship
  • Temperament

Sometimes some of the descriptions which will be described further down this post will also be made up of;

  • Determination
  • Influence

You might also notice sometimes in a scout/coach report that they give you an indication of the other hidden attributes I’ve yet to mention. Not all the time mind you but sometimes you might come across them. They would be;

  • Consistency
  • Dirtiness
  • Important Matches
  • Injury Proneness
  • Versatility

Player personalities are a vital part of Football Manager and sometimes are overlooked by people but they can tell you quite a lot about the player and how he’ll deal with certain things like team talks, chats, off the field events, on the field events and so on.

Another big part of player personalities is the media handling, it’s quite clever and intricate how they all link and work. It’s a lot to get your head around and very complicated so I’m just going to link you to two threads that go into detail and explain the workings out and how they all link together;

http://community.sigames.com/showthr…Handling-Guide

http://community.sigames.com/showthr…onal-youngster

Smac as actually uploaded a spreadsheet in the second link above that makes it all easier to understand if someone wants to delve deeper into this side of the game.

Below are all the types of personalities that you can find, some are harder to find than others but I think this is the complete list. If I’ve missed any I do apologise but feel free to add more if you’ve found some I’ve missed

Staff Overview

staffoverview

This is the basic staff overview screen which I must say is a lot better than it was on previous versions. I can see quite quickly how strong or poor I am and which areas need strengthening. Although I think I have found a bug here because I can have one more coach yet there isn’t a shadowed out icon to represent this, so I’ll go and report on the forums later.

So I can have one more coach but the screenshot also shows me I can have an extra five scouts and two physio’s. So while I do have staff I am well understaffed for what is expected for a club of this size. It’s now down to me to try to fill these spaces if I can.

Assistant Manager

assistantmanager

As you can see, he isn’t very good and is quite poor for the size of the club. He also doesn’t have a desired personality either with it being balanced. While the Head of Youth Development has the biggest influence of newgens personality types, your other staff still contribute towards it as well. So it’s equally important to have like-minded staff or staff with good personality types. I’m not sure if I can replace him currently due to the financial predicament of the club, it’s quite a mess and I’m leaking money left, right and centre.  I might have to make do here until I can attract someone of a better quality, so he could be okay in the short-term. But he is definitely someone I need to replace at some point.

Fitness Coaches

f1

I have three fitness coaches at the club and I believe that is far too many for a club of this size. I’d be better served getting rid of one of them so I can have more general coaches. The above fitness coach is a good candidate to replace because other than a high fitness attribute he is relatively poor.

f2

Although he is equally as awful.

f3

However Carlito is easily the best fitness coach at the club and someone I will be keeping on. This means I will be attempting to replace the second fitness coach I posted above and  replacing him  for a coach rather than someone who does fitness. This also means I will replace the first fitness coach too for someone who is better at fitness coaching. This should make that particular category much stronger and improve the star rating of it.

Coaches

I only have two of these for the time being excluding myself and the Assistant Manager. Both of them are on low wages compared to what the people applying to my adverts are asking for and their attributes aren’t that bad either.

coach1

coACH2

Both of them have the same personality too which is fairly determined. It’s not a fantastic type to have but it’s also not one of the poorer ones they could have had. Due to this and them both being on a decent wage I won’t be replacing either of them. Instead I’ll look to bring another one into focus on the things these two lack. This will provide me more balance overall with the star ratings for the categories.

Goalkeeping Coach

Goalkeepingcoach

He’s not amazing not by any stretch but he will do for now. I’d love to bring another goalkeeping coach in but I don’t have many keepers at the club so he isn’t being overworked and the main reason I can’t, is again down to finances. Once this improved I will look to either replace him with someone more suitable or replace him and bring another keeper coach in. This all depends on my board and how the finances go over the next few months.

Under 20’s

The staff for the under 20’s is none existent so this needs some extensive work and I need to bring people in straight away.

u20 coaches

u20 medical

I have no coaches apart from the Head of Youth Development and I have no physio’s so I’ll look to address this situation straight away.  It might be a case of bringing in people who aren’t suited or ideal just so I can get some staff in. Then look to change it at a later date, I guess some staff is better than no staff right?!

Scouting and Director of Football

I have a total of four scouts and one director of football. As I am playing a save that is focused on developing youths from my own academy this section for me isn’t that important. It’s still nice to build up scouting knowledge but it’s not vital for me to know what other players are out there. That being said, I will still hire the maximum scouts I can if I can find any willing to join. The current scouts I have are okay but nothing great. I’ve not took screenshots of these because they’re just your average scouts and only have knowledge of Brazil.

This is the Director of Football;

dof

He really is rubbish but that doesn’t matter as I don’t use him for anything as I like to handle everything myself. So I can sack him if I want or just let his contract run out.

I will update with a future post and highlight the staff I bring in but I just wanted to show people what I have to work with currently to better understand the philosophy I’ll be creating at this club with all the documented changes I’m about to undertake.

  1. Your blog posts are extremely entertaining and very useful and informative at the same time!
    I started playing FM about a year ago and my biggest accomplishment is winning the Argentinian league with Boca but I’m trying something a bit more ambitious this year as I’m starting a save with United FC and try to take them to the Premier League and perhaps at some point even win the league and carry on to winning the Champions League too.
    Your posts are a great source of inspiration to me and apparently to a lot of other people too.
    Keep up the good work!

    1. There are lots coming but I hope you realise it takes a lot of time to grab all the screenshots needed. Plus it’s hard to do that when you have a young family and work.

  2. I kinda figured the rest of staff had an influence on newgen personality. Any idea what the percentage split is between HoYD/other staff? purely out of curiosity

    1. No-one knows the actual percentage split as that’s too hard to figure out due to not having the tools to work it out. The HoYD has the biggest influence though.

  3. I wasn’t aware that staff personality is shaping your intake, apart from the HoYD. That’s … interesting indeed. It also never crossed my mind that if you do everything yourself anyway, you obviously don’t need a Director of Football. (Although the role of the DoF seems to have been improved in FM16). Thanks very much for these insights. I will check my backroom staff right away for their personalities, just to get an idea.

    One question: You did mention that backroom staff attributes are of course a matter of financial possibilities. What is the mixture you are aiming for there? Would you rather take a coach with 18/8/4 in the most important attributes, or one with 10/10/10. Both equal to 30. Or does it even matter in the end?

  4. Hi Cleon – just wondered, one of the things I most enjoy is young player development – in the past I have also ensured that ALL of my coaches have a decent ‘working with youngsters’ attribute – even for the coaching staff of the first team/reserves.

    Overall – is this needed? I am aware that they don’t coach the under 21 squad and just the first teamers but still in the main squad are younger players under 23 – does this have any impact at all or should I start to disregard the need for this attribute in first team/reserve coaches so much?

    I am loving this site – so helpful and motivating!

      1. If you don’t employ a HYOD, which staff member(s) most influence youth personality? I generally play LLM using a club with decent facilities and recruitment. Or maybe a fallen club with history. But I rarely employ a HYOD due to finances. Just wondering if I’m negatively affecting recruitment by not using one.

        Excellent blog, by the way. The layout is accessible and, of course, the writing is top notch!

        1. It’s whoever is responsible for bringing youths into the club, you can check this via staff > staff responsibilities and it’s an option right at the bottom or near the bottom.
